Fickle UK Fans...

The UK fan base sure is a fickle bunch, right? We were clamoring for the day when we had a coach who wanted to have the best of the best represent our distinguished basketball, and we now have him. However, when he tells a few walk-ons to hit the road, the fans begin to lambaste him with ridicule and wonder his reasoning for doing such a blasphemous act.

Folks, this ain't OTS or BCG style rosters anymore! If you don't have the talent to hold your own in practice, you will not be in that gym! Coach Cal is not gonna waste his time with cheerleaders who can provide little competition in a desire competitive scrimmage. Sure, I feel bad for Dwight Perry and 'Benske, but they had an opportunity of a lifetime for the last few years.

The days of 20 man rosters or walk-ons getting serious burn are over....deal with it and let Coach Cal do work.

Open Arms Await...

For over a decade now, Kentucky's program has been regarded as a "pass to score" team. Papa Brooks has been trying to change the public opinion of the team, by proving that the boys in blue can also run the ball to the end zone as well. Still, the 'Cats have a very strong nucleus of wideouts all capable of collecting six points every time they touch the ball. Of course, when you think of wide recievers for the 'Cats, the first name that comes to mind is Randall Cobb. Cobb is very capable of scoring on the ground, on the fly and through the air, although he is expected to only be a signal caller to mix things up. Coincidentally, Cobb is although the 'Cats rushing leader that returns this year. E.J. Adams, Kyrus Lanxter and Matt Roark also look to see significant time throughout the season, and both seem to be ready to put up some big numbers for the 'Cats.

Side note: I will not be posting over the weekend as I have a couple of prior engagements to attend. Monday's Preview Offensive Line

T.C Drake on Mackey List

The Nassau County Athletic Commission released their John Mackey Award watch list yesterday, and Wildcat T.C Drake's name is on alot of people's mind. The rising Senior Tight End Drake (Bardstown, Ky.) caught 12 passes for 204 yards last season, with an outstanding average of 17 yards per reception. He is expected to be a very important cog in the passing attack for the 'Cats this year. Congratulations T.C. on being considered for this prestigous honor. The John Mackey Award is awarded to the nation's top Tight End in Division I's Football bowl Subdivision.

No Change in Uniforms!

Matt May over at Catspause has brought some bad news to a jubilant fan base. There has been much publicity regarding new uniforms, brought on by Coach Cal's tweets regarding Nike meetings, but all the pub appears to be unwarranted. May reported today that there will be no drastic changes in the uniforms for the Cats, but there may be a few tweaks.

May believes that they will take away the black K that was a tribute to Mr. Bill Keightley and will, possibly, add another alternate uniform.

Here's to hopin' they bring out the solid black uni's a bit more next year!

Thanks for Patience

I would just like to thank everybody and especially, my fellow bloggers Derrick and Gary, for their patience. If anybody has any suggestions, questions, or comments, please feel free to contact me. This is a huge learning process for myself, and be on the lookout for tommorows post when I break down the 'Cats wide recieving corp.

Many, Many Questions in the Backfield

As promised, on this Hump Day, I bring a preview of the Kentucky backfield today. As expected, Tony Dixon will most definantly be missed. To fill in those big shoes, the 'Cats will turn to the likes of Alfonso Smith and Moncell Allen. Although they will have to do so behind a severly depleted O-Line, they should be solid for the 'Cats this season. Other than that, it's kind of a "wait and see" situation for the backfield.

Also, in unrelated news today, Kentucky had the honor of providing an official visit for a 4-Star recruit by the name of Isaiah Lewis, a 6-foot, 190-pounder from Indianapolis’ Ben Davis High School.

Jarmon Signs a Contract!

Former Kentucky defensive end Jeremy Jarmon has signed his contract with the Washington Redskins. Jarmon signed a 4-year deal that included a $755,000 signing bonus!

Congrats Jeremy! Nothing better than a Wildcat joining my favorite NFL team!

Hail to the 'Skins!!

Can Hartline be more of a heartbeat in the huddle?

As we all know, Mike Hartline isn't Tim Couch. Nor is he Jared Lorenzen. That being said, Mike's arm is stronger than his head and I'm sure this isn't news to you. Hartline's key downfall last year was his inconsistency in the pocket, and although he was technically the leader of the offensive unit last year, he was far from it inside the huddle. Personally, I believe Hartline had the skill-set to lead an offense in the SEC. Although, if he doesn't shape up and put the ball in the end zone, the 'Cats have several talented yet, inexperienced, signal callers they can insert into QB1's spot on the depth chart.

Will "I'm Not a Charlie Daniel's Fan" Fidler, looked amazing in the Blue-White game, while leading his team to a victory in UK's Spring Game .Caleb Newton comes very highly touted nationally, and hails from quite possibly the big city of Peewee Valley, KY. (You can't make this shit up.) Fidler would seem to be the logical choice should a change need to be made, but none of the reserves have the big game experience. The experience factor makes me think that barring injury, Hartline will be the man this year. The real question is can Mike step up in the pocket and lead the 'Cats to four straight bowl victories?

Tomorrow, Running Backs.

UK Video of the Day!

Nobody comes into Rupp Arena and disrespects the Cats!

This is one of my favorite moments in Kentucky basketball history and I could watch this dismantling 100 times and still not get bored!

Rumors, Rumors!

The Kentucky basketball world is never short of rumors running amuck among the fanbase, and Larry Vaught and company got the frenzy started today! Matt Jones and company at KSR tweeted the news that UK is close to garnering two new huge commitments, Brandon Knight and Adrien Payen, in its 2010 basketball class.

Larry Vaught apparently has heard from a reliable source that both of the aforementioned recruits are closing to giving their verbal commitments with Calipari and company. Larry Vaught is one of the more respectable and reliable beat writers in the great state of Kentucky and to have him report this news is quite the development. Although, the news of Brandon Knight shouldn't bring forth a great amount of shock, because people close to the Knight recruitment have believed Kentucky was the leader for a while now, but Payne is a different story.

Adrien Payne is a 6'10" havoc on the defensive end and his recruitment by the Cats has accelerated at a rapid pace and a commitment did not appear imminent. However, with Cal hot on his trail, it appears that Kentucky has made their mark!

We will keep an eye on this developing story over the next several days to weeks...

On a side note, We'd like to once again welcome our newest Blogger, Brett. Brett is as rabid a UK fan as the rest of us and we expect great things from him. Welcome to The PMB, Brett!

T-Minus 9 Days.....

Yes, it is almost that time of year once again. The 2009 Kentucky Football season is a little more than a month away, and the players report in just over a week. Over the coming days, I plan on breaking the entire offense and defense down, while refamiliarizing ourselves with returning players, and new bodies in blue.

The 'Cats already lay claim to three SEC Media Days All-Conference Selections, which given the overall importance of these selections is almost as much of an honor as being selected for jury duty, it's still a step in the right direction. Starting backer Micah Johnson, Cornerback Trevard Lindley, and the anchor of the O-Line Zipp Duncan have all garnered the honors for the 'Cats this year. Lindley though, was the only first-team selection while Duncan and Johnson were selected for the second-team. Now the good lord willing and the creek don't rise, we will have more than three selections on the All-Conference and All- American teams when the real ballots are cast in late November, but it is a very long season. And as all UK fans know, the SEC can be as cruel and unpredictable as the Bering Sea.

Joe Jackson is Coming to Town...

Joe Jackson, who is listed by several services as one of the top 3-4 point guards in America, is planning to make his visit to The University of Kentucky in October. Jackson is a Memphis native and was being heavily recruited by Calipari when he was still the head coach of the Memphis Tigers.

One has to wonder how exactly Calipari is going to handle the point guard situation with this coming class. UK is currently one of the leaders for the top four point guards in the class, including Brandon Knight. Knight is the number one player in the country and you have to think that Cal would love to wait on him to make a decision before anything else happens.

However, we thought the same thing last year and Wall and Bledsoe are both now coming to Lexington! Cal is beyond amazing recruiting these point guards!

Calipari on Offseason Recruiting ...

University of Kentucky Head Coach John Calipari wants to change the scene of offseason recruiting by college coaches. The new head coach has always entertained the idea of eliminating the July observation period, but allow coaches to evaluate recruits during certain weekends while school is in session. If Coach Cal thinks it is a good idea then, as a UK fan, I must agree with him.

By eliminating the July recruiting period, Coach Cal believes his time would be better spent on-campus developing his own players. I must say it is an interesting idea.

Sorry...

Sorry for the lack of content this weekend, guys..

I've been out of town and unable to get access to the internet...

Everything will back to normal tomorrow...and hopefully, Brett will be ready to make his splash.

Thanks,
Derrick

Cats Picked Last...

The SEC media has made their decision and labeled the Cats as the worst team in the SEC East. Yes, behind Vanderbilt! The SEC East is as competitive division as any in all of college football, and this distinction for the Cats clearly labels that to be true.

Hopefully, Papa Brooks and company will take this as a major insult and come out with their guns blazin'!

However, not all bad news came from the Media Days. Trevard Lindley was named First-Team All-SEC defensive back. Congratulations to Trevard!

We'll have a dedicated post to Trevard later! Check back soon!

The Rivalry Grows ...

Congrats to our new blogger Brett! We look forward to blogging with you. With Josh Selby back on the market after his decommitment from UT, one can only think part of the reason is Coach Cal and the University of Kentucky. With the success Coach Cal has had with point guards getting to the NBA in lottery pick fashion, Shelby recognizes this opportunity as difficult to pass up. As Derrick posted earlier, even his mom sees the opportunity.

If he does choose Kentucky, the rivalry between UT and UK will only intensify between these programs. And frankly my dear, I can't wait. I would look forward to the opportunity to brag even more in the face of Bruce Pearl and his sweaty antics.

New Blogger Joining the Team!

I just wanted to let you folks know that we have added a new member to The PMB/Ave of Champions Staff! Brett, whom is as big a UK fan as all of us, has decided to dedicate his time and help the maturation process of this site!

So be on the lookout for Brett's first post in the next day or so and be sure to give him a great welcome!

Thanks,
Derrick

Selby's Mom Acknowledges..

Josh Selby's Mom has made public what everyone in the world of college basketball recruiting already knew, Kentucky is a major player for her son.

Selby's mother had this to say regarding Kentucky's recruitment of Josh...

"There's a lot of talk out there and it's a shame people are believing rumors," she said. "But at the end of the day, anybody with a basketball brain and knows what Calipari has done you have to consider Kentucky. It doesn't mean it's a done deal but you have to consider Kentucky."

So, there you have it, folks! Way to break the news on that one!

End of the Line for Papa Brooks?

The man that has helped restore respectability to the Kentucky football program, Rich Brooks, may have changed his stance on becoming the most tenured coach in The University of Kentucky's long football history.

When asked today at the SEC Media Days about the possibility of being UK's longest running coach, Coach Brooks had this to say..

"I don't think that's going to happen," Brooks said of reaching the goal.

Brooks has helped lead a dramatic turnaround at Kentucky, leading them to three consecutive bowl wins, and he has done so from the ground up. When Brooks took over the program it was in shambles and the lack of talent was nearly disgusting for an SEC football institution. However, that's no longer the case and the Cats are now a consistent bowl threat and an ever improving program within the toughest conference in the country.

You can thank Papa Brooks for that!

Dicky V's All Rolls Royce Teams

Just reading an article by Dick Vitale gets me pumped for basketball season even though it is still summer. Vitale has picked his summertime ALL-ROLLS-ROYCE teams. Making the second team is none other than the great Patrick Patterson. I believe he should have been awarded a spot on the first team, and by the beginning of the season, I believe Vitale's mind will also change. Joining UK's Pat Patterson on the second team:

C - Greg Monroe, Georgetown
F - Damion James, Texas
G - Scottie Reynolds, Nova
G - Greivis Vasquez, Maryland

The remaining teams can be seen here. Congrats to PP. I am sure many awards will follow.

That's Right...It's Here!

When Coach Cal was introduced as head coach of the University of Kentucky, one of the items fans had to look forward to was the debut of Coach Calipari's brilliant website.

Well, that time has arrived! Coach Cal and his website are on the verge of being launched and from the looks of the "countdown" page, it has the chance to be a brilliant website. I just hope and pray that they ordered plenty of bandwidth, because as we all know, Kentucky fans have the ability to crash any website on the planet. Don't believe me? Ask Matt Jones just how much trouble he has keeping his website up and running during big time news days!

So tune your browser to the aforementioned URL and wait... because the time has arrived for CoachCal.com!

Point Guard U?

The University of Kentucky with John Calipari at the helm is quickly becoming Point Guard University.

Calipari currently has the Cat's in the mix for the top four point guards in the 2010 class, Brandon Knight, Kyle Irving, Joe Jackson and the recently de-committed Josh Selby. The emergence of Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans has helped cement Calipari's place as the leader of the pack in point guard success, and he hops John Wall can continue that tradition this coming season.

Basically, if you're a stud point guard and have your eye on the prize, then John Calipari is the man who will get you there...

SEC Media Day ...

As I received my Alumni Membership packet in the mail today, I couldn't help but get excited for the upcoming UK season. SEC media day is scheduled to kick-off this Wednesday. Representing UK will be Coach Rich Brooks, defensive back Trevard Lindley and offensive lineman Zipp Duncan. The entire schedule can be seen here.

On, on, U of K, we are right for the fight today,
Hold that ball and hit that line;
Ev'ry Wildcat star will shine;
We'll fight, fight, fight, for the blue and white
As we roll to that goal, Varsity,
And we'll kick, pass and run, till the battle is won,
And we'll bring home the victory ....

Kentucky, A Team on the Rise...

ESPN has named Kentucky one of its schools on the rise this upcoming basketball season.

It's amazing what one offseason can do for a program that headed for the depths of mediocrity, but now we see them sitting as a possible championship contender, because of one man, Calipari.

Calipari Relishes the Spotlight...

Larry Vaught, probably the best UK beat writer in the game, has a great article up about how Coach Cal relishes the lifestyle of being the UK basketball coach.

Most fans know that the fan base is a fishbowl that is not for the faint of heart, or perverted drunks from Texas, and it takes a unique individual to prosper in the increased pressure of Lexington, Kentucky. Calipari has made it obvious during his first few months on the job that he is the perfect slice of pie for Kentucky fans and it has been a match made in heaven.

Keep an eye on Vaught's columns if you aren't already...he's good at what he does

UK the Leader for Selby's Services??

My how quickly things escalate! Matt Jones and company are reporting that Kentucky is the ultimate leader for Selby's services, VIA Jeff Goodman.

As we reported earlier, Selby de-committed from Tennessee in the last 24 hours and speculation was because he wanted to attend a Nike school. Well, Calipari and Kentucky are quickly becoming Nike's most prominent representative and this recent news hammers home that realization.

We'll keep you updated as this situation progresses...

Selby Decommits From UT....UK a Player?

Josh Selby, the 7th ranked player in the class off 2010, de-committed from the University of Tennessee last night, citing that he wants to attend a NIKE school. Considering that a NIKE school is the most likely reason for the decommit, one has to believe that Kentucky and Memphis are now big-time players for the recruit. Memphis also has the argument of having two of his cousins, the Barton brothers, already committed to play for their program. The Kentucky connection, outside of WWW and Nike, is hard to place, especially with the belief that Brandon Knight is a heavy lean to Calipari's Cats.

We'll keep you updated on the progress of the Selby situation as the information continues to come...

Jodie Named 10th...

Jodie Meeks was named the 10th best performer for his summer league performances.

Several have raved about his superb performance for the Bucks this summer, including David Thorpe..

10. Jodie Meeks, Bucks
Meeks earned bucket after bucket this week, from near and far. He has a powerful body and a pure shooter's stroke. And he plays with supreme confidence.

Jodie continues to earn high praise from NBA people across the country and shows that he was very, very undervalued during the entire draft process.

Lebron James in Lexington....

Everyday that Coach Calipari is the coach at the University of Kentucky their brand continues its rise back to its spot among the elite. Usually Calipari is busy on the recruiting trail promoting that name, but when Lebron James wants to stop by for a visit, you abide.

James, whom is a big fan of Calipari, brought himself to Lexington, KY to meet with the players and take a tour of the Craft Center, just gave UK and Calipari the best recruiting tool in the university, LBJ's support of the program!

I imagine there were some ecstatic individuals running around the Craft Center today!

Calipari's Twitter...

Calipari's twitter account recently lost over 400,000 of it's followers in what is believed to be a cookie/bug with twitter itself.

Calipari's twitter was on pace to reach the annoying Ashton Kutcher as one of the most popular followers in the twitter universe.

Such a shame, I was anxious to see Calipari become the most internet popular man in the entire world...he's much more entertaining than that punk ass Ashton Kutcher...

Jarmon is a Redskin....

Former Kentucky defensive end Jeremy Jarmon was selected by the Washington Redskins in Thursday's supplemental draft. The Skins, whom are looking for eventual replacements to Phillip Daniels and Rednalo Wynn were quick to pick up Jarmon.

Five other teams were willing to put in fourth round claims, who was the only player selected Thursday.

Congratulations to Jeremy Jarmon!

Investigation Regarding Football Players Nixed...

Rumors were running rampant on message board and call-in show's recently regarding an incident supposedly involving several UK football players at the Royal Lexington Apartment Complex in Lexington. However, in the words of Steve Moss, "No News is Good News," and it appears that the investigation has been closed.

Among those supposedly involved was stud linebacker Micah Johnson, and if anything had translated from the accusations, the loss of Johnson would have been devastating to a team that's already lost Jeremy Jarmon for off-the-field behavior.

Even though the law appears to have backed off, it will still be interesting to see what Papa Brooks decides to do regarding this situation. I'm assuming several players will be running more than their fair share of gassers, but lets hope a suspension doesn't arise from the behavior. Also, let's pray that these players realize just how stupid it was to be mentioned in a situation as asinine as the one that occurred at Winnie Street this past weekend and don't do something as immature and naive in the future.

I Got Whooped !!

It seems as though the Billy G. saga will continue. It has been reported that former UK coach Billy Gillispie is planning to to write a book with the assistance of his friend Steve "Tiger" Richardson, executive director of the Football Writers Association of America. We all know Billy can't write a book by himself. Evidentially, negotiations of a book started back in 2006 at the Final Four when Gillispie met with a publisher in Indianapolis. The book titled, "The Billy Gillispie Story," will focus on his coaching career.

Billy believes now is the best time to proceed with the book project because he now has time to give the new business endeavor "honest reflection," whatever that means. Basically, nobody wants to hire this worthless coach and seeing the ongoing legal battle between he and UK will continue, Billy is out of money. I am not buying his honest reflection bullshit. I doubt the book will be very long because his coaching career at UK can be summed up in three words ... "I Got Whooped." We all remember this all to recent line after every UK loss. The answer to every press related question was We Got Whooped or We Aren't Tough Enough. These two phrases would be his answer to every question and a majority of the time these answers would not make any sense to the question asked. The reporter would ask a legitimate question, such as, "Why does your team still continue to struggle with a press break as you enter tournament play?", and Billy's response would be "We Got Whooped" or "We ain't tough nuff."

The book should be titled, "I Got Whooped" or "I Ain't Tough Nuff." At least then it would be worth reading.

Kentucky Post Spring Preview and Predictions...

Coach Rich Brooks has taken a probation stricken Kentucky football program and lead them to an unprecedented three bowl victories in a row.

When Brooks entered the fray, UK was losing to the likes of Ohio and winning two ball games a year. A few years later they are on their best streak since the 1950s and have added talent and depth to a depleted program. Expectations for the Wildcats are no longer 4 wins and a near upset victory over one of the SEC big boys. Kentucky players and fans expect a bowl game this year and they expect to beat The Lane Kiffin's down in Knoxville for the first time in over two decades.

While, those expectations may not seem lofty for many programs...for UK it is a world away from 2-10 seasons and enjoying the Makers Mark in the parking lot more than the product on the field. This year UK fields a talented and experienced SEC caliber defense and an offense that needs to be serviceable to get this team to another bowl.

Offense

Joker Phillips dealt with much criticism over the last year for the ineptitude of his offensive unit.

However, that criticism may be unwarranted, because the offensive talent pool last year was depleted by graduation and sent several key players to the NFL. Enter 2009-2010.

There are many question marks surrounding the quarterback position and they are warranted. Although, Brooks and company signed two highly touted quarterback prospects, Morgan Newton and Ryan Mossasowski, Michael Hartline is the starting quarterback following spring practice. Hartline provides little flash but helps to eliminate mistakes. While, many believe Morgan Newton is the eventual successor to Hartline, expect to see Mike taking snaps for the majority of the season. Hartline will need plenty of help from his skill position players to succeed.

Alphonso Smith will enter the fall as the starting tailback and has the talent to do well. Yet, Alphonso has been known to quickly flee the hole and bounce his game outside and that has brought about dismay with Coach Brooks over the past three seasons. Kentucky coaches have reason for optimism because they witnessed a harder running and attacking Smith during spring practice. It will be a wait and see approach for Alphonso's transitioning this new found toughness to game day. The bruiser of the bunch, Moncell Allen, is attempting to return from academic problems. The "Turtle" is a needed piece of the puzzle because of his bowling ball running style and occasional big play ability. Big John Connner provides the Cats with one of the best fullbacks in the SEC and should open plenty of holes for the running game. The coaches are hoping for the return of big play threat, Derrick Locke from injury not solely for his running ability but for his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.

The majority of us had a better chance of catching the swine flu than UK receivers had of catching the ball last season. This was a young and beleaguered unit that developed a serious case of the dropsies as the season progressed. The Wildcat offense needs Randall Cobb to touch the ball as much as possible. Whether it is in the slot, down the field or during the Wildcat formation...Cobb is a playmaker and the only proven playmaker that UK has at wide receiver. The Cats need E.J. Adams, Aaron Boyd and Kyrus Lanxter to develop into solid wide receivers with the occasional down field ability to open up the running game. Whether this group can do so remains to be seen. The tight end unit needs to act as an outlet for Hartline and Maurice Grinter and T.C. Drake have yet to show that ability. However, they can be serviceable blockers on a mediocre offensive line.

Zipp Duncan and company are a solid offensive line, but far from spectacular. The return of Christian Johnson is a boost to a line that struggled mightily at times last year. If this unit can help the Cats stay on the field and maintain solid drives it will lead to much more success on the offensive side of the ball.

Defense

Kentucky's defense was admirable throughout last season. Shutting down out of conference opponents and maintaining a decent season through SEC play. Kentucky fans were nervous over the possible departures of Micah Johnson, Jeremy Jarmon and Trevard Lindley this off season, but all three decided to return to the roster and postpone their money making dreams. Yet the good news was shortlived because Jeremy Jarmon, after choosing to return, made the mistake of taking a banned supplement. Jarmon's failed drug test will be a blow to the defensive unit, specifically the line, and his loss, along with Myron Pryor's, will be tough to overcome.

Myron Pryor was a beast in the middle for this team and Ventrell Jenkins was a much better player than many recognized. The loss of these two could deplete the depth of the line. Factor in the loss of Jeremy Jarmon this summer and you have a unit that has been throughly gutted by graduation and a problematic drug test, but they must overcome the adversity and utilize the talent that is still available to them. Corey Peters, Ricky Lumpkin, Chandler Burden and Mark Crawford all are solid lineman with size that can help stabilize this unit.

The torch of senior leadership has been passed from the departed and talented Braxton Kelly to a young man named Micah Johnson. Micah, whom struggled with pass coverage at times, returned to school to improve his game and wreak havoc on SEC offenses. Micah is a pre-season All-SEC candidate and provides much needed leadership and ability in the middle. Sam Maxwell has been an unsung hero among the linebacker corp over the past couple of seasons and will help ease the loss of Johnny Williams on the weakside. Strongside linebacker and depth is a question mark with this group and Coach Brown needs Danny Trevathan & Jacob Dufrene to step up this season and both showed the ability this spring.

One player that strikes fear into all UK opponents is Trevard Lindley. Lindley is possibly the best defensive back to ever don the blue and white and is a legitimate shut down corner. Offenses will avoid this first round prospect like the clap. Opposite Lindley, Randall Burden cemented himself as a solid defensive back during the bowl game. These two defensive backs are a luxury that the UK program is not used to having on the field. Winston Guy was moved to strong safety this spring and showed the hard hitting, big play ability that teams covet. Guy is still maturing as a player and, if he lets the game come to him, will be a great safety for the Cats. The head knocking Ashton Cobb and Calvin Harrison will man the free safety position. Defensive backfield is possibly the deepest unit on the entire roster.

Special Teams

Tim Masthay's strong leg will be missed on kickoffs and in the punting game, but Tydlacka appeared to provide a strong and accurate leg for the punting unit. However, Lones Sieber remains as the primary kicker and with Lones comes inconsistency and a mangled confidence. It will be interesting to see if Tydlacka eventually takes over all duties with the kicking game (even though Rich Brooks doesn't prefer that method). UK MUST be proficient in blocking for the specialists and is an area that must be improved on this offseason.

While, UK has talent at many individual positions and a solid defense...this season will hinge on the development of it's quarterback, Mike Hartline and the skill position players on the offensive side of the ball. Expect UK's defense to keep them in many games and allow them the opportunity to pull off a few upsets, but they can't do it on their own.

Predictions
September 5, 2009-@Miami, OH-The Cats will be playing on a neutral field in Paul Brown stadium. The Cats defense will be too much for an outmatched Redhawk team. UK-38 Miami-10

September 19, 2009-Louisville-The Kragthorpes come to town and have a dysfunctional and depleted roster. It's been quite a fall from grace for the Cardinals and their fans. The Cats dominate on both sides of the ball at home. UK-24 Louisville-3

Myron Pryor Gets Paid...

Former Kentucky defensive tackle Myron Pryor is getting paid! Pryor has agreed in terms with the New England Patriots to join their roster and the contract terms are believed to be for four years and nearly 2 million dollars.

Pryor, who was derailed by injuries throughout his career, has shown that he can be a disruptive force when he is healthy and after his performance at the combine, many were shocked to see him fall to the sixth round. Pryor now has the ability to join the best franchise in the NFL and develop at a natural rate!

Kentucky Brings Out the Big Guns!

The University of Kentucky and the state of Kentucky are tired of the old drunk Billy Gillispie. A Kentucky state legislative has approved the spending of up to 100,000 dollars to hire a Texas law-firm to help their case against Gillispie.

Gillispie, who basically ruined any chance he has at a legitimate career with this lawsuit, continues to think he was fired without just cause and had a legal contract. I guess he was still hungover when his lawyer turned down several offers from UK, including one that outlined a RAISE from the university.

No wonder this man is one of the most hated person to ever set foot in the state of Kentucky...

Antoine Likes to Gamble...

Antoine Walker apparently likes to get his shimmy on at the gambling tables. Walker tried to pass, now listen to this, ONE MILLION dollars in bad checks at at three separate Las Vegas casinos recently.

Not 125 dollars, not 200 dollars, but 1 million dollars in bad checks! I mean, does the casino not have check track to make sure that a check for a couple hundred thousand is good? I say good attempt on Antoine's part. If they're stupid enough to take a check for that amount without even verifying funds, then so be it!

I mean, the man just wanted a little extra change to sling some dice!

WOO Weds ...

Former UK big man Lukasz Obrzut, known as "WOO" to all Kentucky fans, married his old college flame this past Saturday in Lexington. The ceremony was performed by a local judge at the courthouse. Obrzut met his newly wedded wife as a junior, and the couple plan to move back to Lexington this fall. It will be nice to have the big guy back in the great state of Kentucky.

Obrzut finished his college basketball career in 2007. I believe the only thing he learned from his collegiate basketball career was the phrase .... "arms straight up." Best wishes to the newly weds.

Trouble on the Horizon?

The Kentucky football team has already been rocked this off-season with the dreadful news of Jeremy Jarmon's suspension, but it appears that more shaky news is on the horizon.

Rumors are circulating and being verified every minute that several UK football players, including Micah Johnson, were involved in an altercation with member's of Lane Kiffin's bunch of hoodlums in Lexington. The fisticuffs supposedly escalated to the point of a gun being wielded and a shot being fired.

The details of the situation are vague, at the moment and it is believed that this group of UT players have been at the apartment complex before and attempted to "raise some cane", so to speak. This current altercation may have arose from the previous meeting with the Tennessee players.

I'm sure you, like me, is wondering what in the hell a group of Tennessee football players are doing rolling dirty at Royal Lexington and Newtown Crossing, and hopefully when the details arise, we will find out more information.

Stay tuned...something has to arise from this situation.

On a side note, Lane Kiffin needs to go to hell...

The Greatness of Patrick Patterson...

Patrick Patterson arrived at the University of Kentucky with one thought in mind, "Return to Greatness." Patterson joined the Kentucky roster at one of the most trying and unsuccessful times of the historic program, but he has continued to be the epitome of the aforementioned term greatness.

Patterson's time as a Kentucky Wildcat was trying from the very beginning, including his recruitment. Patrick was coveted very highly by the man that is known as OTS throughout his time at Huntington High School. Orlando "Tubby" Smith had put all his "eggs" into one basket with the Patterson recruitment and, although Tubby left prior to Patterson's commitment, laid the groundwork to establish a relationship between Patrick and the University of Kentucky. However, a few weeks prior to a possible commitment to UK, Tubby Smith left for whiter pastures at the University of Minnesota and left Patterson with a trying decision on his plate.

Billy Clyde Gillipsie, or the most unsuccessful man in sports for 2009, entered as the new basketball coach at Kentucky and his first goal was to keep the Patterson family happy. Billy managed to stabilize the bridge from Huntington to Lexington and Patterson eventually chose Kentucky as his basketball suitor. Patterson was immediately labeled as the "savior" of Kentucky basketball, the man who would help steer Kentucky basketball back to the promise land. Patterson held the weight of an entire state on his broad shoulders and, while the team slumbered in a slow start, we saw the tenacity and effort of a player who was willing to burden the proverbial load.

Patrick produced one of the most successful statistical season's by a freshman at Kentucky in school history, bumping shoulders with the likes of Dan Issell in the UK record books, and helped bring a disjointed team and coach together for late season run at success. Then came the news that shook the Kentucky fan base from Paducah to Pikeville. Patrick Patterson would miss the rest of his inaugural season with a stress fracture in his ankle. The Big Blue Nation wept when the news of their new anointed fan favorites dire situation surfaced and the pessimistic nature of the Kentucky fan base reared its ugly head. The members of the team were brought together by the loss of Patterson and played with a fire and desire that willed them to an NCAA tournament berth, but the berth was bittersweet without Patrick Patterson in uniform. Following the season Kentucky fans wondered aloud whether Patrick would be back to join the roster for his sophomore season and were beyond pleased when his return appeared evident.

Patterson returned with a fire and vigor to will an under talented bunch of players to a successful season during his sophomore campaign. The season, from a team stand point, was a disaster from the very beginning, a loss to VMI. The team seemed to distance themselves from their coach and, while they still played hard, the animosity towards BCG was obvious to anyone with eyes and/or ears. As the season progressed, Patrick continued to lead a squad that wanted to win, but were constantly belittled by a coach with the attitude of an under-sexed high school librarian and the season continued to spiral downward. However, there was still the outside chance that Patterson and company could somehow edge themselves into the NCAA tournament and that would save a tarnished season.

The torturous season ended with an embarrassing NIT loss at Notre Dame and discommodious firing of a coach who was in well over his head. A team and a program was in dire straights and the expectations were for Patterson to leave the disgruntled program for greener(literally) pastures. The worst thoughts imaginable were running rampant throughout the message boards, barber shops, classrooms and bars of the state of Kentucky, but then Mitch Barnhart did the unthinkable. He hired the one man that could resurrect a downtrodden and dead program, the man who could walk on water in most Kentucky fan's eyes, John Calipari. Calipari immediately brought a renewed vigor to the University of Kentucky and the fan base and, most importantly, Patrick Patterson.

When Calipari was hired, Patterson saw something that most young men with NBA aspirations wouldn't have seen, a chance to be something great at the collegiate level. Patterson saw a roster that went from mediocre to spectacular with his talented game leading the way. Patterson chose team greatness over personal greatness and showcased his love and affection for a state and University by choosing to return for his junior season. While we've been forced to watch Patrick miss out on the NCAA tournament in his first two trying years in Lexington, Kentucky, we will now have the pleasure of watching him continue his greatness with a final four caliber team.

Patrick Patterson's greatness will now be showcased on a truly "great" team. A team that will help lead the legend of Patrick Patterson into the limited pantheon of "Rupp's Rafter's." Enjoy the final season of heart and tenacity that will be displayed in his final season. Even more than that, enjoy the final season that will showcase Patrick on an NCAA tournament floor, ripping down a rebound in the waning seconds, dunking over an unsuspecting UTAH center from Australia and eventually wearing an over-sized hat on a ladder with scissors in hand. Enjoy it folks. Greatness combined with the love of a program like Patrick Patterson's doesn't come around that often.

Calipari Among Most Powerful ...

The Orlando Sentinel has made a list categorizing the NATION'S most powerful people in college sports. Only two college coaches made the top twenty. Ranking number 14, one behind Florida's football coach Urban Meyer, is none other than our own, Kentucky basketball head coach John Calipari.

In other news, the NATION'S least most powerful person period was Billy Gillispie.

Darius Miller Gets the Gold!

First it was Tayshaun Prince and the 2008 Olympic Team and now Darius Miller can join him in saying, "I have a gold medal!" Team USA finished with an 9-0 record throughout the tournament and we're convincing winners in most games.

Although, it's just an Under-19 FIBA tournament medal, it's still a gold medal! Miller had an up and down tournament, but thrived in several games, including 8 points in the USA's 88-80 victory over Greece in the championship. Miller has gained a valuable experience playing in this tournament and, hopefully, it translates to the court this coming season.

Meeks Shines in Debut ...

In his first game as a Milwaukee Buck, Jodie Meeks scored a team high 14 points and led his team to victory over the Dallas Mavericks as NBA Summer League play began in Las Vegas. Meeks led the Bucks to a 65-59 win by shooting 6-9 from the field and grabbing two rebounds. Neither team shot well from the field in this low scoring affair.

It is great to see Meeks represent UK so well. Congrats to him on a fast start to his NBA career.

Meeks Makes Debut as a Buck ...

Former UK star Jodie Meeks will make his debut as a Milwaukee Buck tonight as 21 NBA teams begin competing in Summer League play in Las Vegas. Summer League play will showcase a majority of the first and early second round draft picks. The Milwaukee Bucks are scheduled to take on Mark Cuban and the Dallas Mavericks in one of the last games on Friday night.

Currently, Jodie has played more minutes than any other player and is leading the team in scoring late in the second quarter with 6 points. With 3:49 left to play in the 2nd quarter, the Bucks are losing 19-26. The good news is Jodie looks to be off to a great start during Summer League competition.

Matt Pilgrim Signs a Financial Aid Agreement...

The practice legend Matthew Pilgrim has signed a financial aid agreement to play ball for the Okie State Cowboys. Everyone assumed that Pilgrim was headed to the land of barbecue and ghettoness in Memphis, but changed his mind at the last minute to play for Travis Ford and the Cowboys.

Pilgrim is applying for a waiver to receive eligibility to play this season and, for his sake, let's hope the NCAA grants him the waiver, because the kid shouldn't have to sit out another season.

Darnell Dodson in Action...

Video of incoming sophomore Darnell Dodson has been hard to come by since he inked with KY, but a new one has surfaced on youtube.

He looks like he has a nice stroke and is fairly athletic...he will be a nice addition to the Cats!

Doran Lamb Likes the Idea of Playing With Eric Bledsoe...

Five-Star shooting guard Doron Lamb seems to like the idea of playing beside Eric Bledsoe. Lamb, who recently visited the UK campus, is a shooting guard at Oak Hill Academy and has been throughly impressing scouts during the summer session.

Lamb had this to say regarding the Kentucky Wildcats,

“I think John Wall is one-and-done,” meaning he’d play only one season for Kentucky before turning pro, Lamb said at the Nike-sponsored King City Classic on Thursday. “Eric Bledsoe, he’d be there if I go there. He and I will be a good backcourt.”

Doron has gone on record as saying that Kentucky is his current leader, but he will still take the rest of his visits and enjoy the recruiting process. However, a statement like the above has to make Kentucky fans feel very confident!

Darius Posed for a Breakout....

When a Kentucky fan watched Darius Miller play last season, the talent that oozed from Darius Miller's game was apparent to everyone not named Billy Gillispie. Miller possesses a knack for getting in the lane, has a good mid-range game, he's a serviceable three point threat and has good handles for a player of his size, but Miller spent more time in Gillipsie's doghouse instead of flourishing on the court. Calipari has a much different season in store for the Mason County alum.

Miller was so impressive during his several workouts with Calipari that the coach is predicting a breakout season for the sophomore to be. Those are big words from a Coach who has as talented an incoming class, on paper, as any in the history of the game. Miller's skill set is the perfect compliment to the dribble-drive motion offense and has the ability to be a stat sheet stuffer this coming season. With that kind of ability, Miller should obtain a role in the starting lineup and develop into a valuable asset on both ends of the floor.

Kentucky fans have been waiting for an in-state kid to become a star for several years now and after the failures of Carter, Stockton and Carrier, the time has come for a Kentuckian to be an integral part of a Kentucky basketball roster.

New Uniforms for Calipari Era???

Coach Calipari was not only in Cleveland this week for recruiting purposes. As play began for the King City Classic camp, Coach Cal was one of the many coaches at the camp recruiting potential future UK stars. I am sure everyone has seen the pictures of Coach Cal and Lebron James shooting the shit in the stands.

In addition to recruiting, Coach Cal tweeted that he and several Nike officials met to discuss potential new uniforms to set off the Calipari era. I hope they go with the black and blue.....

Kentucky Football in a Pre-Season Top 25???

Yes, you read the title of this blog correctly. While expectations at the University of Kentucky have been on a steady increase during the Rich Brooks era, most people wouldn't have expected to see Kentucky sitting in a pre-season top 25. However, Vegas Insider has done the unthinkable and ranked UK 25th in the country coming into this season.

Vegas Insider is widely considered one of the most reliable ranking systems in the country and to see them think that highly of the Kentucky program should make Rich Brooks and company very, very proud.
